Grand Teton National Park is one of those spots you can’t wait to get back to. Gorgeous mountains, abundant wildlife, reflecting pools, and mind-bending sunsets, all just outside one of the coolest western towns to eat, shop and hang out in. And, to top it off, the Tetons are one of those rare places, like Kauai or Patagonia, where you can stop just about anywhere and create a special image.

The Tetons is also the perfect location to teach a photo workshop. Great roads filled with pullouts and epic vistas, the Snake River, spectacular lakes, fall color, abundant wildlife, scenic ranches and gorgeous old abandoned homesteads all set against that ever-present backdrop of the Grand Teton, Mount Moran and the rest of those jagged crags. It’s a difficult park for a landscape photographer to get anywhere in a hurry: when I’m there, I find myself constantly stopping the van to take just one more shot along the way.

Logistics

Transportation

The closest (and most convenient) major airport is Jackson Hole International Airport. If you were thinking about renting a car, Bozeman is a little over four hours from Jackson, and takes you through Yellowstone, while Pocatello is about 2.5 hours away. We’re happy to get the word out with other students to see about carpooling arrangements.

• From our classroom, we will utilize El Jefe, my 12-passenger Sprinter van, to access photo locations. Anyone wishing to drive separately is free to do so.

Classroom and lodging information

Our classroom, and my lodging, will be at a spacious rental house in Wilson, 10 minutes from Jackson on the southern side of the park. We’ll provide more location details as the workshop gets closer. (Two rooms are available for students to rent in the home with us. Email me for more details.)

There is plenty of lodging in the Jackson area, although it is generally on the pricey side, and rooms tend to book well in advance. There are also a number of short-term rental properties available in and around Jackson, but they tend to go quickly. Overall, We recommend that you book reservations as early as you can. Here are a few hotel options that have been rated well (the Hostel and Hampton Inn were recommended by previous workshop participants). Note that we can’t guarantee room rates; these are provided as guidance:

• The Hostel, Teton Village, $141/night, (307) 733-3415;

• Elk Country Inn, downtown Jackson, $275/night, (307) 733-2364; townsquareinns.com/hotels/elk-county-inn/

• Hampton Inn Jackson Hole, Jackson, $399/night, (307) 733-0033; hilton.com/en/hotels/jacjhhx-hampton-jackson-hole/

• Rustic Inn Jackson Hole, downtown Jackson, $419/night, (800) 323-9379;

Please book rooms as soon as possible as they will fill fast.
