Venice is an astounding place. My initial reaction to first stepping off the boat was that this city shouldn’t even exist! Built from a chain of more than 100 islands with waterways for roads and boats for transportation, it’s a photographer’s dream location.
Venice has a feel unlike any other place on the planet, modern in sensibility, but with an old-world look, one driven by the realities of its origins. All of which makes it the perfect place for a street photography workshop. So, bring your walking shoes, prime lenses and sense of adventure and join my good friend Rick LePage and I for a trip through this otherworldly Italian city.
Venice as a location
With its canals as its freeways and transit options, its labyrinth of streets and alleys and ornate bridges, Venice is a city that is just plain fun to wander around in; and when you’re looking for a place to rest, it is filled with small cafés, fun bars and excellent restaurants of all types.
During our time in the city, we’ll tour it together and in small groups, at all hours of the day and night, seeking out picturesque locations and decisive moments, small neighborhoods off the beaten track, and the iconic plazas and architecture that make Venice so well known.
We’ll be staying at the Hotel Avani Rio Noro, a delightful 4-star hotel that is centrally located for excursions in every direction, but far enough off the Grand Canal to avoid the biggest crushes of people.
Initial meet-up
We’ll meet at our hotel in Venice late in the afternoon of Sunday, September 27, for a stroll in the neighborhood near our hotel, looking for dinner, and perhaps a first foray into the night with our cameras. The following morning, we’ll meet as a group at the hotel. There, we’ll give everyone an overview of the city, and talk about how we will spend our week together. While our main objective during the week is to wander the city, we will also have class time to view each other’s photos, talk about photographic processes, and have general Q&A.
The week’s schedule
Unlike many of our other workshops, our schedule will be flexible, with no fixed agenda. Primarily, we’ll shoot early in the mornings, as the city comes alive, and at the end of the day, as sunset approaches and people flock to the bars, restaurants and plazas. From blue hour on through the night, Venice becomes a completely different city, and we will do our best to help you capture the presence and the beauty of that time of day.
During the middle of the day, we’ll have opportunities to rest, share images in photo reviews, wander the shops and alleys, or go off on our own (or in small groups) in search of anything that strikes our fancy.
Payment Terms
