My friend Rick LePage and I have been printing photographs for more than 20 years and we are passionate about the art of printing. We are excited to announce our next printing workshop, to be held in my Portland studio in February 2024.
The practice of printing has been sadly neglected in this age of sharing digital images on phones and computer screens. While we have no problem with screens, we firmly believe that learning the art of printing will make you a better photographer in the field, and a better photo editor in your studio.

Printing is a demanding process. The slightest weakness in an image is magnified in the translation from pixels to ink. The more you print, the more aware you will be of sharpness and exposure in the field as well as precision edits and local adjustments in post-production.

For us, there is no greater feeling for a photographer than holding a print you’ve captured, edited and run through a printer yourself. Whether you have never printed before and want an introduction to the process or you have some experience printing and would like to further hone your skills, we are excited to have you join us.

Course Description
Limited to a maximum of six participants, this workshop includes ample one-on-one and group classroom time. In the studio, we’ll have a number of Epson photo printers of all sizes — from letter-size printers to large-format printers capable of printing up to 44 inches wide. We’ll talk about the differences between printers, discuss paper types and print longevity, and give you tips and techniques for optimizing your editing to achieve great prints. Over the course of the workshop, you’ll have lots of time to work on your own prints in the studio, and will take home up to five prints that you’ve worked on during our time together.

These workshops are designed for photographers of all levels, and the small class size will let you learn at your own pace, and with your own goals in mind. Maybe you have long wanted to print your photos, but haven’t done much, if any, printing at all. Maybe you have a photo printer or some limited printing experience, but want to get better prints. Or you’re an old hand who wants to fine tune your workflow and expand your media horizons — or you want to start printing BIG.

During our time together, we’ll have opportunities to talk about the different printer models on the market today, and how to think about printing without breaking the bank. We’ll give you plenty of opportunity to test the different printers on hand, and to work with a wide range of paper types.

We will also talk about how to build a better print workflow and how to choose different media types. We will also offer tips and tricks that Rick and I have garnered from years of trials and tests in our own print labs.

Regardless of your printing or editing level, our goal is to inspire you to add the print to your photographic repertoire. And, with the small class size, you’ll be guaranteed to get plenty of hands-on instruction from me and Rick, as well as lots of time with the group to chat about printing and pore over each other’s prints during the process.

What’s Included
Each workshop is priced at $1,795, which includes a $200 lab fee that covers media supplies; a group dinner during the workshop; one full day of classroom instruction; and two-and-a-half days of open lab time in my studio, where you can work with Rick and me on prints and editing.

We generally break each day for a short lunch, and end the days in plenty of time for people to go off and have dinner alone or as part of a group.

Payment Terms
You can reserve a spot in this workshop by placing an $900 deposit. We will send an invoice for the remaining balance approximately 90 days prior to the workshop. The balance must be paid in full 60 days prior to the workshop to hold your place.

If you cancel anywhere from 59 to 30 days prior to the workshop, we will make every effort to find a replacement.
